According to the UN-Habitat, the urban population in African countries has grown significantly in the last two decades, and this rate of growth is only expected to increase. Some projections indicate that, by 2025, the urbanization rate in some African countries will account for as much as 85%. Thus, the continent\u2019s demographic landscape will continue to change. Urbanization on the continent has created both socio-economic progress and challenges to inclusive growth, with substantial problems such as the proliferation of slums and pressures on the environment, energy and transports systems.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In\u00a0the\u00a0last\u00a0two\u00a0decades\u00a0China\u00a0and\u00a0many\u00a0other\u00a0countries\u00a0have\u00a0invested\u00a0in\u00a0African\u00a0urban\u00a0systems\u00a0especially\u00a0in\u00a0mineral\u00a0resources\u00a0rich\u00a0countries\u00a0such\u00a0Angola,\u00a0Sudan,\u00a0Ghana,\u00a0Tanzania,\u00a0Ethiopia\u00a0and\u00a0the\u00a0Democratic\u00a0Republic\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0Congo.\u00a0China,\u00a0which\u00a0also\u00a0faces\u00a0rapid\u00a0urbanization,\u00a0has\u00a0provided\u00a0investment\u00a0and\u00a0expertise\u00a0to\u00a0build\u00a0several\u00a0urban\u00a0infrastructure\u00a0projects\u00a0in\u00a0almost\u00a0every\u00a0African\u00a0country.\u00a0However,\u00a0some\u00a0international\u00a0observers\u00a0worry\u00a0about\u00a0the\u00a0potential\u00a0repercussions\u00a0of\u00a0Chinese\u00a0involvement\u00a0in\u00a0African\u00a0urbanization.\u00a0What\u00a0can\u00a0African\u00a0countries\u00a0learn\u00a0from\u00a0China\u2019s\u00a0urban\u00a0development\u00a0experience?\u00a0What\u00a0can\u00a0models\u00a0of\u00a0sustainable\u00a0urbanization\u00a0contribute?\u00a0\u00a0What\u00a0do\u00a0the\u00a0experiences\u00a0of\u00a0developed\u00a0nations\u00a0such\u00a0Canada\u00a0contribute?\u00a0What\u00a0can\u00a0be\u00a0done\u00a0to\u00a0make\u00a0sure\u00a0these\u00a0investments\u00a0in\u00a0urban\u00a0Africa\u00a0can\u00a0create\u00a0inclusive\u00a0growth\u00a0and\u00a0sustainable\u00a0development?\u00a0These\u00a0questions\u00a0will\u00a0be\u00a0discussed\u00a0during\u00a0this\u00a0special\u00a0panel\u00a0within\u00a0ICCASU\u00a0and\u00a0will\u00a0formulate\u00a0recommendations\u00a0for\u00a0policy\u00a0and\u00a0planning.\u00a0\u00a0Scholars\u00a0and\u00a0practitioners\u00a0across\u00a0disciplines\u00a0are\u00a0invited\u00a0to\u00a0submit\u00a0abstracts\u00a0and\/or\u00a0suggest\u00a0specific\u00a0panels\u00a0corresponding\u00a0with\u00a0the\u00a0themes\u00a0listed\u00a0below.<\/p>\n
